Fall Maternity Photos in the GTA: Best Timing, Locations & What to Wear

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year to photograph your pregnancy in the Greater Toronto Area. The light turns warm and golden, the parks fill with colour, and the cooler weather makes long outdoor sessions far more comfortable than a July heatwave. It also makes for a lovely keepsake, because these photos capture both a season and a stage of life that won’t come around again.

At Blessed Assurance Photography, I photograph maternity sessions across Toronto, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Mississauga. This guide covers when to book, where to shoot, what to wear, and how to prepare so you can relax and enjoy the session.

When Is the Best Time to Book Fall Maternity Photos?

Timing in your pregnancy. Most expecting mothers do best between 28 and 36 weeks. Your bump is clearly round, you usually still have energy, and there’s a buffer in case baby arrives early. If you’re expecting twins or have been advised to plan for an earlier delivery, book a little sooner.

Timing in the season. In the GTA, fall colour usually peaks somewhere in October, though it shifts a bit each year depending on weather. Because peak colour only lasts a week or two, booking early gives you the best chance of catching it.

Timing in the day. Golden hour, the hour or so before sunset, gives the softest, most flattering light. In early October that’s around 6:00 to 6:30 pm, and it moves earlier every week. After the clocks go back in November, sunset falls around 5:00 pm, so plan accordingly. If your schedule allows, a weekday session also means quieter parks and more room to move.

Best Locations for Fall Maternity Photos in the GTA

Here are some favourite areas for autumn portraits. Each park has its own rules, so check the current photography and permit requirements before your session. I can help you choose a spot based on your look and your travel time.

  • Edwards Gardens (Toronto): Winding paths, bridges and rich fall foliage close to the city.
  • Kortright Centre for Conservation (Vaughan): Open trails and mature trees, a good fit for a natural, woodland feel.
  • Toogood Pond Park (Unionville, Markham): A charming setting with water reflections, and a good option for Markham and Richmond Hill families.
  • Rouge National Urban Park (Scarborough): Wide landscapes and trails for a more adventurous, earthy look.
  • Riverwood Conservancy and Erindale Park (Mississauga): Creek and forest scenery, with plenty of spots that photograph well.
  • Your own backyard or home: If you’d rather stay close to home, an in-home or backyard session can be warm and personal, especially for a cozy window-light look.

What to Wear for Fall Maternity Photos

Clothing has a big effect on how the photos turn out. A few guidelines:

  • Choose fall colours. Rust, mustard, burgundy, forest green, deep navy and warm cream all look beautiful against autumn scenery. Avoid neon colours and busy patterns that pull attention from you.
  • Pick fitted or stretchy pieces. Dresses that hug the bump (or a bump-friendly gown with a train for movement) show off your shape better than loose layers.
  • Bring layers. A cozy cardigan, a wrap, or a knit shawl keeps you comfortable between shots and adds texture.
  • Consider a traditional outfit. Many mothers enjoy including something that reflects their heritage, such as a kasavu saree or another traditional outfit. Just let me know ahead of time so we can plan the poses and background around it.
  • Coordinate, don’t match. If your partner or other children are joining, pick colours in the same family rather than identical outfits.

Including Your Partner, Children and Family

A maternity session doesn’t have to be just you. Many couples want a few portraits together, and older siblings often love being part of the “big brother” or “big sister” moment. If you’d like to include family, tell me in advance so I can plan the session flow and keep little ones comfortable. If you want a session that covers the whole family, take a look at our guide to fall family photography in the GTA.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session

  1. Book early. October dates fill quickly.
  2. Have a backup plan. Fall weather can be unpredictable, so we’ll agree on a rain date in advance.
  3. Eat and hydrate beforehand. You’ll feel better and have more energy.
  4. Bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots, plus a change of footwear for photos.
  5. Tell me what you want. Whether that’s soft and candid, classic and elegant, or something more creative, a quick conversation beforehand makes the session feel effortless.

After the Session: The Newborn Chapter

Many families book a newborn session after their maternity shoot so they have a matching set of photos from before and after the baby arrives. If that appeals to you, see our page on newborn photography in the GTA for what to expect.
